Knitting Life

Finding my reason to knit

Between playing dolls and cars, bedtime stories, and never-ending laundry, finding time to knit can feel impossible. I’m a mom to two little ones (ages 5 and 2), I work full time, and I’m also a wife to someone I love very much. From music class to soccer practice, life is full — and it’s hard to justify just sitting down to knit.

But I miss it. So, I started reflecting on one simple question: what is my reason to knit? Do I even need one?

For much of my knitting journey, my reason has always been someone else. I love gifting my handmade items. I’ve made sweaters for tiny newborns all the way to adults. I’ve knit more hats than I can count. I’ve even made myself a few larger projects, like cowls and sweaters — but my true joy has always come from giving my projects to knit-worthy loved ones.

As life has shifted, though, so has my knitting. These days, my reason to knit often comes in a smaller, simpler package: socks. A basic vanilla sock pattern (I especially love the one from Crazy Sock Lady) has become my go-to, on-the-go project. It’s portable, easy to memorize, and forgiving when chaos surrounds me. I can carry it in my everyday bag, pull it out for a few minutes, and still feel like I’m making progress.

But lately I’ve realized something else — maybe my reason to knit doesn’t have to be someone else at all. Maybe it’s simply for my own sanity. For the peace of mind it brings. For the way it allows me to pause, take a breath, and reset in the middle of a hectic day. Maybe the reason shifts daily, and maybe that’s perfectly okay.

So whether your reason is gifting, sanity, or just the quiet joy of yarn running through your fingers — it’s enough. Through this blog, my patterns, products, and monthly newsletters, I hope you’ll find your reason to knit. Or maybe you’ll just join a community that believes you don’t need a reason at all — as long as you knit.

What’s your reason to knit (right now)? I’d love to hear in the comments.

Until next time, happy knitting!
